Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: Do I need to buy a new bike?A: No, it's not really necessary if you have a bike now. For your first tri it's OK to use any type of bike you have in your garage now. Most first timers use a mountain bike, touring bike, old 10-speed or whatever they have. Later, you can consider buying a new bike once you know more about your needs. Q: What should I wear in a triathlon?A: Most new triathletes race in a swim suit from start to finish. Generally triathletes wear a proper trisuit (one or two piece). During the bike and run portions it's common to wear a pair of biking or running shorts over the swim suit. Q: I've never done a triathlon before?A: The only goal you should set for your first tri is to finish with a smile on your face. For your second tri you can consider setting time goals once you know what to expect. Q: The entry form asks for my predicted swim time ? Why do they want to know this and how do I figure it out?A: The race wants to know this so you can be put in a swim group of similar ability. To predict yours swim half of the race distance in a pool, time yourself, and then double your time. Q: What should I eat or drink during the race?A: You don't need solid food or even many calories during a sprint distance race. Having a 16-ounce bottle of sports drink on your bike during the race should be all you need. On the run there should be one or more aid stations with sports drinks available. Q: What's the biggest mistake new triathletes make on race day?A: They start out too fast on each leg of the race (swim, bike, run) and then fatigue and slow down a lot before the end of each leg. Q: Is parking provided?A: Yes,... Q: When do I need to arrive?A: An hour before your allotted swim start time. To collect and set up your equipment, rack your bike in transition, attend a race briefing and get changed and ready for the swim. Q: Do I need a helmet?A: Yes. All competitors must wear a helmet for the bike ride and it must be fastened on your head before you mount your bike. And can only be removed when you have racked your bike. When choosing your helmet ensure that it fits comfortably and firmly on you head when the chinstrap is fastened. Failure to wear a helmet will mean disqualification from the event. Q: Can I listen to music on the run or cycle?A: No, unfortunately not. British Triathlon rules state that any equipment that acts as an impediment to hearing or concentration is prohibited from use during an event (including transition). This includes MP3 players, personal stereos, mobile phones and other such equipment. Q: Will refreshments be provided during the event?A: Liquid refreshments will be provided in the transition area between the swim and cycle and between the cycle and run. Q: Bike fit for duty?A: Bar ends on handlebars and tri-bars should be plugged, both brakes in full working order Q: What is the run course like?A: The entire 5k is a true off-road run course and can be slippery in wet conditions. Q: Are shoes allowed immediately after pool swim?A: Shoes can be placed immediately outside the swimming pool (just outside the entrance along the wall of the building, marshal will direct you) Q: Are tumbleturns allowed.A: Yes HELPFUL CHECKLISTSThe following is a list of triathlon equipment you will need or may want for your first triathlon.
